Who We Are

We are a community of 100+ students dedicated to supporting our peers in reaching their full potential. At our core, we firmly believe that peer tutoring is a holistic and engaging way to learn. Our tutors aspire to share their experience and knowledge with younger students.

Each tutor is carefully selected, including both an academic and personal interview to see if the applicant is a good fit for the team.

Bethesda Scholars Owner: Aksel Bell is a Whitman High School alumni and Junior at Duke University. He is majoring in Computer Science and minoring in Math. Outside of class, Aksel is doing research to optimize algae growth using data analysis. This past summer, he worked as a software engineer at JP Morgan. In his free time, Aksel loves to swim and is a member of Duke’s club swim team. Tutoring has always been something Aksel enjoys and he continues to tutor virtually in college.

Bethesda Scholars Owner: Pascal Bell is a Whitman HS alumni and Junior at Duke University. He is passionate about tutoring and has worked with 11 students from Bethesda Scholars, and taught two summer math classes. Pascal is planning on majoring in Computer Science and Data Science. At Duke, Pascal volunteers at the hospital emergency department as a data manager. He also is part of the tech division for Campus Enterprises, a student run business at Duke.

Operations Manager: Sophie Hansen

Sophie is Montgomery Blair HS graduate and rising Freshman at Yale University. Sophie has been tutoring with Bethesda Scholars for over two years and in addition to tutoring, Sophie volunteers at the KID Museum as a Team Lead where she helps introduce younger students to STEM through interactive activities. She also serves as Senior Editor of the Blair Magnet Program’s literary magazine. In her free time, Sophie enjoys crocheting, listening to live music, and attending workout classes.

Churchill Branch Manager: Riya Wedam

Riya is a junior at Winston Churchill high school. She loves working with kids and sharing her knowledge through tutoring. She serves as Co-Director General of her school’s Model UN club and Co-Cultural Committee Director of her community service group, Sayva Teens. In her free time, Riya enjoys reading, running, going to concerts, and playing piano.

Recruiter: Evelyn Goldin

Evelyn is a senior at Montgomery Blair's Magnet Program who is passionate music, math, and journalism. She directs a choir for middle school-aged singers and serves as co-founding president of her school’s club for women in engineering. In her free time, Evelyn likes to play guitar, learn about anatomy and physiology, and spend time with friends!

Recruiter: Zalina Bell

Zalina is a rising Senior at Walt Whitman High school who has been tutoring for three years now. She loves passing on her knowledge and experience by teaching kids chess and debate. She is the incoming Whitman School President and is also part of the debate team. In her free time she likes to read, play piano, and spend time with friends
